Family Planning Q & A

What is family planning?

The goal of family planning is to help you take control of your health and your body to help prevent unexpected pregnancies.

Your doctor at Pacifica Health works one-on-one with you to develop a health plan that helps you manage the size of your family, space your pregnancies the way you prefer, and improve your overall health and wellness.

What are family planning services?

Pacifica Health is a full-service primary care practice. The health experts include an internal medicine physician and OB/GYNs.

With their experience and expertise, the providers offer a wide-range of family-planning-related services, including:

  • Birth control
  • Pregnancy planning and spacing
  • Preconception exams and counseling
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Pregnancy care
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing
  • STD treatment and prevention
  • Infertility services
  • Annual exams
  • Pelvic and breast exams
  • Cervical cancer screening

Pacifica Health also provides gynecological services to diagnose common health issues that affect women. These issues may include fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis.

If you’re struggling with infertility, one of these gynecological conditions may be responsible. The doctors at Pacifica Health provide treatment that helps you manage these conditions and support your family planning needs.

What can I expect during a family planning consultation?

When you visit Pacifica Health for a family planning consultation, you can expect a patient-focused exam. Your provider asks detailed questions about your current and future pregnancy plans. They also review your sexual, gynecological, medical, and family history.

To assess your current health and future health risks, your doctor conducts a physical exam that may include various health screenings. After your exam, they spend time talking to you about your family planning needs and options, including the different types of birth control and how they work.

Your provider may also talk to you about safe sex practices so you can protect yourself from STDs.

Your protection options may include getting the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine. HPV causes a sexually transmitted infection that may result in genital warts and can increase the risk of cervical cancer.

The HPV vaccine protects you from the strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women can get the HPV vaccine up until age 26.
