Pelvic Pain Q & A
What is pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain refers to any discomfort that occurs in your lower abdominal area. This part of your body is home to many organs and body systems, including your reproductive organs, your urinary system, and your intestines.
Your lower abdominal discomfort may develop from an injury or disease that affects one or more of these body parts.
The pain you feel may vary, ranging from a dull ache to a sharp, shooting pain. Your discomfort may come on suddenly and disappear quickly or be an ongoing problem. Some people even experience intermittent pelvic pain that occurs during certain times of the month.
What causes pelvic pain?
Pelvic pain may develop from any number of causes. Common causes of pelvic pain include:
- Muscle strain
- Urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Kidney stones
- Constipation
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Interstitial cystitis
- Appendicitis
- Prostatitis
- Endometriosis
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Menstruation
- Ovarian cancer
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Fibroids
- Ovarian cysts
Anyone can develop pelvic pain. However, it’s a common symptom of many gynecological conditions.
No matter the cause of your pelvic pain, if your discomfort is ongoing or affects your quality of life, Pacifica Health can help.
How is pelvic pain diagnosed?
When you visit Pacifica Health with complaints of pelvic pain, your provider conducts an in-depth clinical exam to determine the underlying cause of your discomfort.
During your evaluation, the doctor asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including the type of pain you feel and when it occurs. They also review your medical and family history.
To confirm or rule out a suspected diagnosis, your provider requests various tests such as blood work, a urinalysis, an ultrasound, or sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing.
How is pelvic pain treated?
Your provider develops a personalized treatment plan for the management of your pelvic pain depending on the underlying cause, the severity of your symptoms, and your overall health and wellness.
For an infection, your provider may prescribe an antibiotic and pain medication to manage symptoms. For a more chronic condition, such as fibroids or IBS, your provider creates a disease-specific treatment plan.
The medical experts at Pacifica Health may also refer you to other specialists as needed.
With gynecological conditions, the OB/GYNs take a medical or surgical approach to care based on your needs and symptoms.
There’s no need to suffer from pelvic pain. Call Pacifica Health or book an appointment online today.
